Past Events
Families swarmed Jackson Park Driving Range again for the 2nd Cheyenne Woods Golf Clinic! Great weather, thought-provoking questions from the youth, DJ Sheila Thurman keeping the vibe grooving, cornhole, football toss, soccer, and groundskeeping presentations kept everyone engaged!
And an added treat of watching Cheyenne and Aaron Hicks’s (pro baseball player) 2 year old son, Cameron, hit golf balls effortlessly using a real golf club! It’s GENETIC!
JPGA partnered with the APGA Tour for another outstanding Youth Clinic at Harborside on 5/19/24!
APGA Tour professionals present to teach the children golf skills:
Chicago’s, Mulbe Dillard, IV, Andrew Walker, and Rovonta Young. They’re preparing to compete May 21-22 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.

Parent testimonials:
Hi Tracy, I want to thank you & the organizers for allowing Matthew the opportunity to attend the golf clinic today. Matthew & I wanted to let you know that the presenters were excellent. I’m including myself because he came home and explained everything they said. He definitely stated he will utilize the mental health practices that were discussed. Once again, thank you for everything you and the organizers do for our youth. It is truly appreciated.
Tracy and APGA, thank you for the format and that mental health component. Alex was talking about the stress balls they gave out and said he wished he had those when his three grandparents died. But he said any time he feels anxiety he will use them.
And learning more about careers that golf has, WOW! Again, I can’t stress how phenomenal these clinics are! Will you guys do another clinic this year?!
Ms Tracy, I met you yesterday at Harborside. My son is interested in learning about golf so he can be a Caddy!
Many thanks to the parents for their heartfelt responses and to the children for being fully engaged and interested in learning more!
And yes, we’re adding her son to our caddy roster at South Shore! Mathis Wint, our scholarship recipient from 2020, is going to be the Caddy Manager!

APGA Youth Clinic
Jackson Park Golf Association (JPGA) (https://jpgachicago.com/) partnered with Advocates Professional Golf
Association (APGA) Tour (https://www.apgatour.org/) to host a clinic for 27 children at South Shore Cultural
Center Learning Center on Saturday, May 27, 2023 from 12 PM to 5 PM.
Not only was the weather wonderful for a spring day in Chicago, but Lake Michigan proved to be a great
backdrop for the clinic!
The clinic encompassed three different teaching sessions, which divided children into age groups (5-8; 9-12,
13-18) and included the following sessions: 1) mental wellness led by Dr. Robyn Jackson, 2) careers in the golf
industry, and 3) golf skills led by professional golfers playing on the APGA Tour.
Dr. Robyn A. Jackson is a Family Medicine specialist and teaches in Tinley Park, Illinois. She has been practicing
community medicine for 29 years.
Adam Stewart talked to the children about First Green (https://www.thefirstgreen.org/) and showed them
how to collect soil samples as part of its environment and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)
education outreach program. Golf courses are used as environmental learning labs for First Green and JPGA is
partnering with them to introduce more children to this fascinating area of science and potential career.
Anthony J. Williams is a local mentor and coach working with children in the Hit It Straight Golf Academy
(https://hititstraightgolfacademy.com/). He is an engineer and discussed the mechanics and physics of the golf
swing and the equipment.
There were five golfers currently playing on the APGA Tour and they covered driving, chipping, and putting
skills with each child receiving one-on-one lessons from the pros. One child said how cool it was to receive golf
lessons from a professional golfer that looked like him.
One of the pros was Mulbe Dillard IV and JPGA is proud to continue their sponsorship of him playing in the TPC
Deere Run tournament in Silvis, Illinois. In fact, JPGA sponsored a trip to watch the pros play in 2022 and
returned again to watch them on Monday, May 29, 2023.
Phat Katz Catering, Inc. (https://www.facebook.com/PhatKatzCateringInc/) prepared scrumptious sandwich
options of turkey, chicken, or vegetarian with lots of additional snacks in the individual lunch boxes!
The essay contest was a 500-word essay on “Why it is important to make positive choices in your health,
wellness and careers.” The winner, Dylan Ford, received $500; and the runners-up who received $250 were:
Alexander Applewhite, Ethan Carver, Caleb Hoskins, Jason Price, and Brandon Walker.
There were prizes, which included two TV sets, golf club sets from Golf Course Builders Association of America
(https://www.gcbaa.org/) Sticks for Kids Program, and a plethora of golfing options!
This youth clinic was an opportunity that allowed two conscientious organizations, APGA and JPGA, to
continue their missions of providing exposing and opportunities for African Americans in golf:
The Advocates Professional Golf Association (APGA) was established in 2010 as a non-profit
organization with the mission to bring greater diversity to the game of golf. The APGA Tour
Board of Directors work to accomplish this by hosting and operating professional golf
tournaments, player development programs, mentoring programs and by introducing the game
to inner city young people.
The Jackson Park Golf Association (JPGA) is dedicated to providing values, substantial resources,
service, opportunities, and community sustainability. JPGA, through a platform of golf, will identify
and provide accessibility, as well as viable and sustainable community resources for the
underrepresented and underserved community through accomplished leadership in the multi-billion-
dollar golf industry.
The 2023 Caddy Training Class at the Kroc Center is the largest class to date! We had 26 registered participants and a waitlist of 14! Many thanks to Juan Espejo for his continued support and energy to develop caddies! And thanks to his organization, Maryville Golf Academy, for donating golf sets to all the caddies that want to now play golf!!!
Caddies have been hired at the following golf courses:
Beverly County Club
Olympia Fields
Butler National
Homewood-Flossmoor
Good luck to all!

HONOR CEREMONY FOR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
Congratulations gentlemen on your accomplishments…
Jackson Park Golf Association (JPGA) and Chicago Parks Golf Alliance (CPGA) honored south side youth Tim Arrington and Abdel Raoul who were awarded full scholarships for their golfing and caddie skills, Monday, April 29, 2019, at the Jackson Park Fieldhouse, 6401 S. Stony Island Ave., from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
Tim Arrington, a senior at Kenwood High School, is a recipient of the Western Golf Association’s (WGA) coveted Evans Scholarship and will be attending Marquette University. The Evans Scholarship is a 4-year full tuition and housing scholarship, awarded by the Western Golf Association based upon criteria of work record as a caddie, financial need, academics and personal character. Tim is notably the first student to earn an Evans Scholarship working at Jackson Park since 1993. “The Evans Scholarship will fulfill my dreams of a college education, and advance desires to serve others through a career in the medical field, “stated Arrington. “Thanks to the Western golf Association, and all the Jackson Park golfers who encouraged me as a caddie, as well as in the classroom and community. there is no greater feeling than seeing my mother overjoyed with my success. I’m proud this scholarship eliminates the stress of tuition she wouldn’t be able to afford.”
Abdel Raoul, a senior at Mount Carmel High School, is the recipient of an Academic Scholarship as well as a Golf Scholarship to play as a NCAA Division 1 Golfer at Prairie View A&M University, where he’ll major in Mechanical Engineering. Abdel’s phenomenal golfing talents garnered him an opportunity to represent the First tee of Greater Chicago at the 2017 Pure Insurance Impacting the First Tee Golf Tournament in Pebble Beach. “Having the opportunity to represent Chicago in that great tournament was amazing!” declared Raoul. “The golfing opportunities, hard work, and courses I have played, along with the sacrifices from my parents, helped get me to where I am today. I am absolutely blessed to be recognized by Coach Jennings (Prairie View A&M Coach) as a golfer and student that can make a positive impact on his team.”
JPGA and CPGA members are extremely proud of these young men’s accomplishments. Not only are their caddie and golfing skills exemplary but their academics as well.
Several representatives of leagues/clubs as well as community leaders, family, friends, and of course golfers, joined us to celebrate the accomplishments of these extraordinary young men. They represent the best of what our community has to offer the City of Chicago and the nation.
